Site upgrading

Postby jiptravolta » Sun Feb 01, 2015 2:39 pm

Hey everyone, just a quick notice to say that the site may be tricky to access over next weekend. I will be implementing some new things, and while it will no doubt go smoothly, I thought a heads up would be in order just in case gremlins appear.

Are there any additions people want to the forums? I think Omegaprime was keen for Spoilers Mod, and someone else wanted the Karma Mod?

What about a Like/Thank You/Upvote for individual posts?

They have it on MTGSalvation and it works quite well I think.

Theres so many its crazy. The karma mod would potentially kill off the trader feedback topic, and seems to work like an upvote system. Under the username a positive/negative counter would appear

I wonder if it's worth making it part of the rules you have to leave either positive/negative feedback in the relevant thread after each transaction in the Buy/Sell thread? Would probably encourage more selling/buying/trading to go on here.

The load on the severs counting the kudos on my individual sick nasty posts would probably crash the site.

I do like the idea of a karma mod - I know that I keep forgetting that the feedback forum exists (although I probably have donkey brain)

I recall having a karma mod many many years ago (I think this was prior to this iteration of TFNZ). I'm not so personally keen on the idea of it, becaase it has the attention to be abused, but given everyone here is pretty chummy I'd hope that it'd be used with genuine consideration.

I think a temporary "trial run" could be a way of testing its use.

There are several ways to manipulate the karma mod.

1) You can set it up so only a certain membergroup can use it. This is useful for points systems. You can restrict the use to the Administrator membergroup and use Karma to dole out points to users.(Providing your admins are 100% non bias)

2) You can set a wait time. The wait time effects how often people can repeat an option. Setting it larger means you can't affect someone's score as much as you could if the time was less. While you aren't allowed to repeat an action (smite vs. applaud) within the wait time - you can change your mind at any time.

3) You can restrict it so that only people with a certain number of posts can smite or applaud - this will prevent people from registering just to smite or applaud.

4) you can show either the net karma or the +/- numbers. This is interesting, as a user with only 50 posts, but +70/-72 is obviously much more controversial than someone who's posted hundreds of times, but has only a +/- of +5/-7

Possible mods could include changing someone's position to reflect their karma, rather than the number of posts they have. Or restricting certain access to people with a karma of a certain level (imagine a category where only people with a karma of 10 or higher could view it).
